Support Our UU Voice at the United Nations

Written by Tess Beistel, Peace Action Group – PAG

The UU@UN is an NGO (Non-governmental Organization) with consultative status at the United Nations. At First Unitarian, we have an “Envoy Team” working through the Peace Action Group to support the UU@UN. Director Bruce Knotts at the New York office stresses the importance of UU@UN to “bring issues into focus and demand action when critical human rights, humanitarian, and justice issues are not receiving the attention they deserve. NGO action can and has moved the trajectory of the UN in the direction of its values.”

Our current local actions:

  • We are working  to achieve the “Sixth Principle Award,” (formerly the “Blue Ribbon Congregation Award”) for First Church by March 31st, as we have done annually for several years.
  • To meet one requirement, we will have a “United Nations Sunday.” On March 21st, Stacey Mitchell will deliver a sermon highlighting the United Nations.
  • We invite congregants to individually join the UU@UN. This year, our goal is to exceed the 15 memberships needed to achieve the Sixth Principle Award. Find out more about the work of UU@UN and make your donation by March 31st.

Who we are: All of us in the Peace Action Group deeply appreciate your support. For more information on UU@UN, please contact Barbara. You are warmly invited to visit the Peace Action Group for our monthly meetings held via Zoom on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to noon.

For more info on our meetings, please contact Tess.

Action Item: Tell Banks to #DefundLine3 Pipeline

Written by Susan Palmiter, Community For Earth – CFE

Similar to the Keystone Pipeline, Line 3 tar sands pipeline in Minnesota must be stopped. You can help by signing an email! The banks funding this project are asked to respond to a letter from 40 Indigenous Women requesting that JPMorgan Chase stop funding Line 3. As of now, Chase has not responded to that letter.

The email to Chase CEO Daniel Pinto asks that Chase:

  • Stop funding ( to the tune of 8.2 billion) Enbridge, the company building the tar sands pipeline Line 3, among other fossil fuel infrastructure projects.
  • Hold true to its intention to align with the Paris Accord.

Final permits for this project were approved and construction has begun. However, there is litigation in process, people putting their bodies in front of the bulldozers, and increased pressure on the Biden administration.

Sign the email.
