Rev. Bill Sinkford – “Sadly in Need of Mending”
A podcast of all First Unitarian Portland’s sermons for 2017.
The High Holy Days of the Jewish tradition remind us that life offers us the opportunity for forgiveness, the chance to begin again in love. There is a lot of power in forgiveness—and maybe that is why it can be such a difficult thing to do.
One powerful image of the Beloved Community speaks of the victory of the power of love over the love of power. Most religious traditions speak of some force that resists the “coming of the Kingdom.” What barriers do we find, and what barriers do we place to stop the movement of love?
Our Unitarian Universalist principles call us to lead lives filled with mercy and compassion – treating all with respect, working for peace and justice, building beloved community. The practicality of living these values may not always be as simple as Love your neighbor as yourself. Let us explore the ways in which tapping into our own well of knowing, into our own conscience, deep wisdom, and spirit, nourishes and sustains the vital work of living Love into the world.
“Come, come, whoever you are.” The Sufi poet, Rumi, is one of our favorites. Our justice work rejects second-class status for any class of people. But our theology affirms that we are already whole and more than a collection of identities. As we gather for the start of a new church year, we will reflect on the challenges of a spiritual journey toward wholeness.
Do you have a question you have been wanting to ask? About Unitarian Universalism? About First Unitarian? About theology or our faith? Rev. Sinkford will respond to questions submitted by the congregation. Look for information about how to submit a question in advance or bring your question with you that morning.
Whether we are in school or not, this time of year can be about starting a new year of learning. And indeed we are always learning, always living in times of change. Question is how we approach that reality, how it is we live with the inevitable changes and transitions that are part of life.
The Rolling Stones tell us, “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need.” So many journeys we take begin with what we want to get out of the journey. But we never account for the surprises along the way. We will consider the surprises we all feel on our journeys together.
Unitarian Universalism is a very long name. Our faith can seem difficult to describe, even for long-time members. What powers our activism and deepens ours caring? What is the Unitarian Universalist “Good News”?
Novelist Haruki Murakami tells us, “Whatever it is you’re seeking won’t come in the form you’re expecting.” For many of us, the choices we make in life depend a great deal on things we are seeking. We will ask ourselves together about those things we are seeking most in our lives and what their seeking asks of us.
