Moderator’s Letter – June 2021

Greetings,

We have reached the end of our church year and are finding our way to the new normal. 300 of us gathered in Pioneer Square on June 13 to hear our service in person for the first time in 15 months. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to sing and dance together.

We also concluded the year by revising our bylaws to include the 8th Principle, which states:

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

95% of those who voted on this year’s annual ballot voted in favor of adopting the 8th Principle. We have joined 100+ other UU congregations with this action. Now the work begins to discern how we live out this principle at First Unitarian.

We have concluded the data gathering process to help us new craft three-year goals for the church. Many of you shared your ideas with us in group meetings and individually. We are deeply gratified that so many people took the time to participate. Thank you! We are now organizing what we heard and will share it in a presentation that will be put up on the board’s web page later this summer. In early September we will have a Board Forum to share the draft goals that are emerging from your ideas.

We wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to being together in the fall.

In service,

Mindy Clark
