March: John Vance

In his paintings, John Vance uses his own photographs, collaged together with movie stills and other found images as inspiration for the finished pieces. In his work, his aim is to try and capture some of the fleeting visual moments of his daily life as they overlap with his thoughts, memories, and memories of memories, into the more permanent and tangible image-objects that are paintings. He has always been
“drawn” to bright colors and bold lines, and so he uses them in his work. His intention is for viewers of his work to draw their own conclusions and
interpretations about the “meaning” of each respective piece. John sees his art, including his evolution as an artist, as works in progress. John Vance lives in southeast Portland and is a muralist / painter / illustrator and art teacher with youth programs throughout the Portland Area.
