Laurie S (she/her) joined First Unitarian Portland in late October 2024, seeking a spiritual community after leaving the evangelical Christian church she had been part of for most of her life. Her journey was sparked by a desire for shared values and connection following a recent divorce and years of feeling spiritually adrift. Encouraged by her therapist to explore Unitarian Universalism, Laurie immediately felt welcomed and knew she had found her people.

A lifelong learner, Laurie returned to school at age 52 to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. She enjoys reading, crafting greeting cards, and spending time with her children and friends. Laurie is actively involved in the Women’s Circle, Good Times Happy Hour, and Loving Kindness meditation group. Passionate about social justice, she hopes to deepen her involvement in LGBTQIA+ advocacy within the church community.
