This is a brief outline of some of the major activities of the 7th Principle Project and the Community for Earth at First Unitarian, 1991 – 2007. 

  • Established the 7th Principle Project of First Unitarian by Leslie Pohl-Kosbau when the Social Justice Program was being remade under the Interim Minister.

Early projects:

  • 1992 Earth Day Fair with bicycle parking and installation of bicycle racks in front of the Church with Mayor Bud Clark.
  • Purchase of Clean Energy blocks from PP&L for Church heating and lights
  • Started the Alternative Gift Market to lessen the purchase of material goods for the holidays and give instead to local and worldwide non-profits benefiting people and the environment.
  • Certified as a Green Sanctuary with Ministry for Earth, and re-certified with the UUA.
  • Campaign for fluorescent lights at home and in the church building
  • Food for Thought campaign to consume less meat and eat local, organic produce.
  • Worked on Buchan Building committee to bring green architecture and certify it as one of the first LEED buildings in Portland (2003-2007)
  • Family after church plantings of trees in Portland Parks
  • Worked with the church staff to switch to green cleaning products, to recycle, reuse coffee grounds and continue with reusable mugs and dishes.Celebrated Earth Day with a Family Earth Fair in the Buchan Hall.Provided an Electrify Now! event for the congregation, including a panel presentation about heat pumps and other options for reducing household carbon emissions.
  • Hosted a Rumble on the River forum about the CEI hub and Zenith energy, and organized walking tours of the CEI hub led by Dr. Melanie Plaut.
  • Supported the Divest Oregon coalition with its continuing efforts to end Oregon’s investment of state funds in fossil fuels.
  • Worked with church administration and Oregon Clean Power Cooperative to install 140 solar panels on the roof.Hung a banner on the Salmon Street side of the church stating:  Climate Crisis – Take Action Together.
  • Organized lobbying efforts on behalf of legislation and policies promoting climate justice:Gathered signatures and organized events on behalf of Portland Clean Energy Fund.
  • Ongoing support for the campaign in opposition to the Jordan Cove LNG terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline.Ongoing advocacy for Oregon legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Connect with fellow congregants at the CFE table in Fuller Hall after each service most Sundays.Communicate to 400+ congregants with messages about upcoming actions and events through the Community for Earth Google group.
  • Sponsored large educational forums for church members and the public, including Forest Defense is Climate Defense forum  and All Church Dialogue on Climate, and organized book readings and documentary viewings.
  • Collaborated with downtown churches, fellow social justice groups including Animal Ministries, and community partners throughout the environmental and racial justice communities.
  • Support organizations promoting voting rights and democracy, including Thriving Democracy
