April is National Poetry Month

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?  Your Beacon bookstore carries some great poetry titles for adults and children alike.

We carry several titles by Mary Oliver, a beloved poet of many of our congregants:  A Thousand Mornings, Why I Wake Early, and both of her Selected Poetry Volumes.  Our denomination’s Beacon Press is the publisher for several of her works.

We have several titles by Rumi, the 13th-century Persian Sunni Muslim poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic: Rumi: A Spiritual Treasury; Rumi: Day by Day; Rumi’s Little Book of Life, and more.

Translated by native Persian speakers, Rumi’s Little Book of Life is a beautiful collection of 196 poems by Rumi, previously unavailable in English.

In children’s poetry, we carry:

Poems to Learn by Heart – There’s a poem to celebrate every moment in life. A poem is a gift of the heart that can inspire, reassure, or challenge us. In this diverse collection, a companion to her New York Times #1 best-seller A Family of Poems, Caroline Kennedy has chosen more than a hundred poems that speak to all of us.

We also have talented poets in our congregation:

Butterfly A Rose by Emily Newberry – a description in poetry of her transgender journey to becoming a woman

Bathless by Vince Fitzgerald – Vince’s widow, Linda Fitzgerald, gave a moving testimony this month.

We also carry titles by William Stafford, Rilke, and others.  Come visit our Adult Poetry section AND our children’s Poetry section to find a great title to treasure.
