There are five adult ensembles at First Unitarian Portland which are all completely dedicated to excellence in music, depth in worship, and strength in community. Each choir has a wonderfully varied repertoire that includes music of all styles and from all times and places, centering on values true to Unitarian Universalist inclusiveness and pluralism.

Chalice Choir

The Chalice Choir is a 72-voice ensemble that meets Monday evenings, 6-7:15 p.m., September through June. No audition is required and appearances in Sunday morning worship services is about once per month. There are a few additional special services and performance throughout the year. Membership is available to any member of First Church on a first-come-first-served basis, dependent upon space availability in each section. UU Women’s Choir

UU Women’s Choir The UU Women’s Choir is a chamber ensemble of around 24 members and growing that meets Wednesday evenings, 6-7:30pm, September through June. It is open to all women and female youth (7th-12th grade). Similar in commitment level to the Chalice Choir, the UU Women’s Choir welcome’s singers with varying levels of choral experience who grow together with an emphasis on musical and vocal skill-building. No audition is required and appearances in Sunday morning worship services is about once per month with a few additional performances throughout the year. Unitarian Choir

A 72-voice ensemble that meets Wednesday nights, 7-9 p.m., September through June. The Unitarian Choir has a rich and proud history, spanning more than half a century, of presenting music of the highest quality in our sanctuary and around the globe. Membership in the Unitarian Choir is available to any member of First Church, based on space availability, and after a casual audition. The Unitarian Choir appears in Sunday worship services once or twice per month and members are expected to have a fundamental comprehension of musicianship and a moderate ability to read music. Members are also expected to produce a pure and consistent tone that is able to blend well with others. There are a few additional special services and performance throughout the year. Chamber Choir

A 32-voice ensemble that meets Monday nights, 7:30-9:15 p.m., September through June. The Chamber Choir was founded in 2002 to appeal to those wanting a more challenging choral music experience. Membership in the Chamber Choir is available to any member of First Church, based on space availability, and after a casual audition. The Chamber Choir appears in Sunday worship services once or twice per month and members are expected to have excellent sight-reading ability and a firm grasp of musical concepts. Members are also expected to produce a pure and consistent tone that is able to blend well with others in a small group. Parker Bells

Parker Bells is a five-octave handbell ensemble founded in 1986. Parker Bells rehearse on September through April on Monday evenings, 6:30-8 pm and for a Fall Retreat and Spring Intensive Rehearsal. Although experience as a handbell musician is a plus, a strong musical background and commitment to teamwork are the greatest indicators of success in this challenging ensemble.
