January 7, 1996. "Slaying the Dragons." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell

January 14, 1996. "The Dream and Waking Life." Rev. Thomas Disrud. On the eve of Martin Luther King's birthday, we consider the current state of race relations.

January 21, 1996. "Janus Is a Two-Faced God." Rev. Tim W. Jensen. In old Roman iconography, Janus is typically characterized as having two faces: one facing backward, and one facing forward. We look back at our youth, and look forward in a way, through the lens of today's youth culture.

February 11, 1996. "Places in the Heart." Rev. Thomas Disrud. A sermon about the earth, and the meaning of "place" in our lives.

February 18, 1996. "Giving up What Hurts Us." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell

March 17, 1996. "Wrestling with Satan." Rev. Thomas Disrud. A sermon on the origin of demonization.

March 31, 1996. "A Universal Message." Rev. Thoams Disrud. It has been only thirty-five years since the Unitarian and Universalist denominations merged. Today we consider our Universalist roots: "Building alliances with those we don't agree with, with people who are different from us, this is the work of Universalism."

April 7, 1996. "The Hard Work of Resurrection." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell

April 14, 1996. "Working for Life." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell

May 5, 1996. "Living Like a Warrior." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell. It's easy to fritter our time away and live in forgetfulness of our real values and passions. How do we live so that we face the world squarely and give out of the deepest parts of ourselves?

May 12, 1996. "Making Marriage Work." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell. We all know about the startling divorce statistics in this country. But there are also many good marriages that work well. What can we learn from these partnerships to help us strengthen our own marriages and holy unions?

May 26, 1996. "Does Prayer Work?" Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell. Some new research shows surprising findings about the efficacy of prayer. We explore, further, the nature and purpose of prayer.

June 2, 1996. "Wise Teachers, Changing Lives." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell. On this day, we reflect on the love and transformation that wise teachers bring into our lives.

June 9, 1996. "The Deep Breath of Life." Rev. Thomas Disrud. "What is the name of the deep breath I would take over and over for all of us?" This is a line from Mary Oliver's poem "Sunrise." The world offers much to us and also demands much. We take our deep breaths over and over again and plunge into the work of life.

June 23, 1996. "What Is Spirituality, and Where Can I Get Some?" Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister.

June 30, 1996. "All Ministry Is Local." Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. What is it like to train for and labor in this religion's ministry? We reflect on the purpose and nature of this unusual calling.

July 21, 1996"One of God's Clumsy Innocents Who Found His Way Among the Angels." Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. McGonagall, William (1825 or 1830-1902), the son of an Irish weaver, attracted a certain following in Edinburgh with his readings in public houses and his broadsheets of topical verse. His naive doggerel continues to entertain, and he now enjoys a reputation as the world's worst poet. (Oxford Companion to English Literature, 5th ed.)

July 28, 1996"If You Meet The Buddha in the Lane, Feed Him the Ball." Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. A sermon on Zen teamwork and the Theology of Sport.

August 4, 1996"The Most Dangerous Man in America." Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. Timothy Leary, who died earlier this summer, is perhaps one of the most controversial and enigmatic personalities of this century. Was he merely a "Pied Piper of Psychedelica," a Harvard profeessor who turned on, tuned in, and dropped out? Or was there more to Tim Leary's thought and mind than meets the dialated pupil?

August 11, 1996"A Minister of the People, by the People, for the People." Rev Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. Theodore Parker (1810-1860) has been called the third "Prophet" of 19th-century Religious Liberalism. Yet unlike William Ellery Channing or Ralph Waldo Emerson, Parker's dynamic combination of academic scholarship, social activism, and entrepreneurial spirit reinvented ministry for a generation of younger clergy attempting to find modern relevance in an ancient and venerable profession.

August 18, 1996"The Journey to Wholeness." Rev. Tim W. Jensen, Summer Minister. Contemporary religious thinkers often describe life as a "quest" or "pilgrimage," without ever specifying what it is we pilgrims seek. On my final Sunday as your summer minister, I will share a few thoughts on this subject.

September 8, 1996"Making a Noise Greater Than Ourselves." Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell. This is a day to celebrate our coming together again after a summer of being here and there. Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell speaks about community: how to build it, and the joys it brings.
