Young Adult Programs
First Unitarian Church Young Adult Programming
These are events that are specific to young adults: people aged 18-35. They combine fun, fellowship, learning, and action in a casual, friendly environment. Please join us!
New! (updated May 1)
- Sunday, May 11. Join us for our monthly potluck. Bring enough of your favorite dish to share. This is a great way to meet new people, have great food, and enjoy good conversations. From 5-8 p.m. at the home of Katie Schnepp and Bill Bell; contact Jan for address and directions.
- Thursday, May 15. Since we missed doing a community service project in April, we'll have two this month. The first is at Friends of the Children's "Friendraiser" event, their signature fundraising auction. Friends of the Children-Portland is a revolutionary mentoring program that is transforming the lives of Portland’s most vulnerable children. They take a preventive, early intervention approach that breaks the cycle of poverty and abuse by helping children in need overcome the many obstacles in their lives. Help is needed for set up (4-8:30 p.m.). Sign up required by May 5. To sign up, contact Jan.
- Thursday, May 15. Today is session one of the "Seeking a Meaningful Career Class," which will help participants explore their passions and determine how to turn those passions into a career (see description below). Class begins at 6:30 p.m.; session two is on Saturday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. Please note: This class has been opened up to those older than 35. To sign up, contact the Adult Programs department at 503-228-6389, ext. 17 or 26.
- Tuesday, May 27. Our monthly games night continues. Meet at 6:30 p.m. in room B204 at the church. Bring your favorite board and/or card games and come prepared to teach them. Also, bring your own dinner, or food to share. For details, contact Jan.
- Saturday, May 31. This month's second community service project will take place at Forest Park, where we'll help out Portland Parks and Recreation by removing invasive species from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Sign up required; please do so with Jan.

YOUNG ADULT CLASSES - Winter/Spring 2008
In conjunction with the Adult Programs department, young adult programming is offering the following classes this term:
- Seeking a Meaningful Career
Some of us know what we want to do with our lives from the time we are little; others fall into a career they love by happenstance. But many of us spend a lot of time trying to find a career that's the right fit. In this two-day workshop, we'll explore our passions - what gets us excited to get out of bed in the morning - and our skills. Then we'll research and discuss how to combine those into a fulfilling career.
Two Days: Thursday, May 15 (6:30-9 p.m.) and Saturday, May 17 (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). Cost: $10.
Reference#: 28WS08
All classes are facilitated by Jan Borr, Young Adult Programs Coordinator.
To sign up, contact the adult programs department at 503-228-6389, ext. 17 or 26, or sign up at the Adult Programs table during social hour, or download the sign up form from the Program Guide by clicking here. Scholarships available to those in need.

YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMMING STAFF
Jan Borr (jborr@firstunitarianportland.org), Young Adult Programs Coordinator, 503-228-6389, ext. 19
About Jan Borr:
Jan joined the church staff in June 2000. She began her career at the church as an administrative assistant, later adding both executive assistant and webmaster duties to her position. In July 2007 she became the church's first Young Adult Programs Coordinator.
Jan was born and raised in Michigan. She received her Bachelor's degree in Germanic Studies and Religious Studies from Indiana University in 1997, after spending her junior year in Hamburg, Germany. In June 2006 she received her Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Marylhurst University. Her thesis was about the connection between religious fringe groups and the pursuit of the American Dream.
Jan was an active participant (and one-time leader) in an all-volunteer-lead earlier incarnation of the young adults group at the church. Many of the people that she met at that time are to this day still some of her best friends.
