Handbells

Handbell playing has a new ring to it since Ellie Hodder took the reigns of the program in 2002. Ellie, who plays with the Bell choir 1professional Bell of the Cascades, has led the program to new heights. Under her baton both Marguerite Bells (HS) and Parker Bells (Adults) have grown in skill, numbers and enthusiasm. In May of 2003 Ellie and all bell choirs and directors presented their First Annual Handbell Concert to great acclaim and enthusiasm.  The Handbell concert has since become a First Church tradition.

Marguerite Bells, our high school ensemble, is directed by Bell Director Ellie Hodder. Named after our late Religious Education Director, the Rev. Marguerite Hessler Deale, this group has opportunities to play at worship services and special musical events.

This fine group will be working on a new piece comissioned especially for them by composer Derek Hakes. They will also travel to Medford in May 2007 to participate in the Rogue Valley Handbell Festival and to work with nationally known conductors and composers!

ADULT ENSEMBLES

Chalice Bells is a place where adults can learn and hone the art of handbell ringing.  This is an especially good place for instrumentalists who are looking for a way to get back to the ensemble experience!  Ringing positions available for all levels of previous musicianship.

Parker Bells, our bell choir for adults, is named after Margaret Parker, longtime supporter of music and wife of the architect of the Salmon Street Sanctuary.

This group has a twenty-year tradition of musical excellence. Ringing positions are available by audition.
