Although our mind can be a wonderful guide and problem solver, our thoughts can also make us a slave to ideals, or preconceptions that make us feel stuck. When the internal critic joins with family norms or cultural pressures, the combination can feel overwhelming. One response is to become even more anxious, pushed by these controlling beliefs. In fact, what the world needs is a nonanxious presence, so that we are able to act with more wisdom, energy, and compassion. In this class participants will take time to doubt, to question expectations, to listen deeply, to practice presence, to pay attention, and to use the tools of journaling and mindfulness to gain clarity and peace of mind. Facilitator: Katie Radditz is a creative writing teacher, and Director of Adult Programs at First Church. Three Tuesdays; 7–8:30 p.m.; Channing Room A101; $20.
