INVITATION TO GET INVOLVED!

Uganda Partner School Project/Card Making Party
Sunday, Jan. 8. Drop in between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., B103.

Our congregation is honored to be one of the founding members of a new UU program to partner US congregations with the New Life School in Uganda. This is the school founded by Rev. Mark Kiyimba, who visited our church last year.

Uganda_School_KidsThe program partners each participating congregation with one grade level in the school. Our partnership is with kids who were in kindergarten in the fall, but as Ugandan kids are promoted at the beginning of the calendar year, “our kids” will be starting first grade in January.

Part of the commitment is financial. Each participating congregation pledges to raise $2400 each year to support the school. The Ugandan steering committee will decide how to spend the money – likely first choices are teacher salaries and building improvements, but they may include sports equipment and other supplies. Here in Portland we met our pledge for the first year by donating half the proceeds of the September plate collection, but the commitment is deeper  than finance. We hope to build lasting relationships between our congregation and the school.
As a first step to making that happen, members of the UU Global AIDS Coalition invite you to drop in on a card making party on Sunday, Jan. 8, anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in room B103 (right next door to the Buchan coffee hour.) Kirsten Carpentier will be there with supplies and encouragement. We hope many of you---adults and /or kids all welcome---will come and make a card. It has to be that Sunday because we will be mailing them to a member of the Tulsa, Oklahoma, congregation who will  hand carry them to Uganda the following week.

Please take this opportunity to come and help us make this a joyful beginning!
