If you are new, please take time to check-in. It is expected that families will like to visit and try us out before making a commitment. We have more then one class for each age group, so classes are assigned. You'll be given a Visitor Card to take to the classroom. We ask that parents pick up children (2nd grade and younger) from their class. If you are comfortable with our setting, older children can meet you in on the first floor (Buchan Reception) after class, but we ask that you let teacher know. Please keep in mind that classes do not end until 10:30 (12:30) even though service may end earlier.
If you have an infant or toddler, or a child with special needs, we have pagers available for sign out. They are available for check out at the Information Desk.
Parents are always welcome to visit their children's classes. Please take time to get to know the teachers. They volunteer to work with your children every Sunday the Learning Community is offered. We value community and consistancy above all else. You will see the same faces each time you join us!
REGISTRATION ... Once you have visited for a few times and are comfortable with our programming, we ask that you register. Your family with then be included in regular emails about Learning Community programming and First Unitarian Church in general.
Registration forms are currently available for the 2011-12 school year. Please complete and return by post or bring it with you on Sunday.
... & EXPECTATIONS
Snack Sign Up: We ask that parents sign up to contribute to snack in their child's class a few times during the school year. We use a website called "Genius Sign Up" and an invitation will go out to all who register. Youth (7th grade and older) take responsibility, and and invitation will go out to them through the same website. Snack is an important part of community building in the class. Be sure to include your child in the sharing!
Positive behavior, interaction and participation are the basic principles of a healthy and safe learning environment. Negative behaviors detract from the learning environment we strive to create in the Learning Community and include disruptive activities, refusing to positively participate in activities, disrespect of others in word and deed and rough housing. The specifics: No violence in word or deed. No “put downs”, only “pull ups”. No weapons, real or imaginary. No horse play or rough housing. No exclusive behavior (you can’t play with us). No electronics (including cell phones and handheld video games) or toys.
Our Classes Are Cell Phone Free: The Learning Community at First Unitarian Church is a relational experience. Therefore, the use of cell phones, IPods, mp3 players, video games, and other electronic devices are not permitted in class. These items encourage isolation and solitary activity rather than relationship and interaction with others. Distractions (electronic or otherwise) will be collected and returned at the end of the session.
