Religious Education for Children

Now Accepting Applications for 2010-2011 Teachers

Positions begin in September. Each year we place over 70 people who commit themselves to teaching in our Sunday program for Children and Youth. Folks are paired up to work as co-teachers. Lessons are well spelled out and resources are plentiful – you will not be placed into a classroom without tremendous support. Prerequisites include at least a six-month attendance at First Church, an interview and a background check.
We currently have positions available for every grade level, including youth programs.
Note that all youth programming will take place at 11:15 next year. There will be a multi-youth grade (grades 7-9) program at 9:15 next year which will be based on smaller church programs and which can stand on their own each Sunday.

Learning Community Socials

Each grade level in children’s pro-gramming has at least one social scheduled during the year and most are planned after the New Year. Hosted by your Parent Coordinators, many involve eating of some kind. All are organized through an online site called “Evite.” Please take a look when you receive an invitation.

Annual Picnic
Our end of year Picnic at Wallace Park, NW 26th and Raleigh from 11:30-2 p.m.
This year we want to include a special social justice project by making self-care kits at the picnic. Families are asked to bring items that we can include in a self-care kit. Kits will be assembled by families at the picnic, who will then take a kit or two to hand out when the spirit moves them. Suggestions are assigned, but feel free to be inspired.

What to Bring: Your Own Dishes, blankets, folding chairs, and anything else you would normally bring to a picnic.

Our picnic is a SANDWICH POTLUCK & SPECIAL SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT
Please bring 12 pieces of each item for the Self-Care Kits.

Religious Education for Youth
Recent Events

Coming of Age
Youth in the 8th/9th grade have completed nine months of learning and testing for the rite of passage known as Coming of Age. Part of their test is to write about their beliefs in the form of a  Credo statement (which you may read here).

Youth and adults leave for their Boston Pilgrimage from June 19-24. Look for reports from youth about their trip late in August.

2010 Boston Pilgrimage

In June 2010, the director of youth programs, Dana Regan, led a pilgrimage to Boston, Massachusetts for a group of 8th and 9th graders from the Learning Community. This was the first opportunity for most of our youth to experience our Unitarian Universalist heritage up close and personal. Click here to  read youth comments about their adventures .

Summer
There are no youth programming events between June 20-September 11.

Fall

All youth programs will be at the 11:15 service beginning September 12.
