Ashland Spring Retreat - Enjoy three plays, engaging discussions with fellow UU’s, Sunday service at the Ashland UU Church, and Ashland in the Spring. Participants will see the following plays: Animal Crackers Hello, I must be going! Written for the Marx Brothers, released as a film after the 1929 Wall Street crash and recently adapted, this slapstick anarchic musical occupies our times with high jinks and zany dance numbers. Troilus and Cressida What are we fighting for? Set during the Trojan War, Shakespeare’s bitterly funny indictment of the futility of war is made more immediate in this production, placed against the backdrop of the U.S. conflict in the contemporary Middle East. Medea/Macbeth/Cinderella Adapted by Bill Rauch and Tracy Young from the plays by Euripides, Shakespeare, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. You know these three plays from two millennia of populist theatre—Greek tragedy, Elizabethan drama and American musical comedy. We’ll see how these separate stories of ambition and love interweave into one revelatory whole filled with surprises. Facilitator: Eric Terrell is Chair of Adult Programs at First Church. Saturday evening, May 12–Monday afternoon, May 14. $305 includes tickets for three plays, two nights lodging with breakfast at the Bard’s Inn.
